Alectra Utilities will invest C$46m in Mississauga’s electricity network in 2026, as part of a broader effort to modernise ageing infrastructure and support rising demand in one of Canada’s largest urban centres.

The municipally owned utility said on March 11 that the programme would replace older poles, transformers and switchgear, while rehabilitating underground cables using injection technology. It will also expand and upgrade substations and deploy automated systems designed to detect and respond to faults more quickly.

Additional spending will connect new homes and businesses as the city continues to grow.

“Mississauga’s size and growth place significant demands on local electricity infrastructure,” said Chris Hudson, senior vice-president of network operations and safety at Alectra. “This investment will strengthen critical equipment, expand system capacity and enable us to restore power faster during disruptions, helping ensure reliable service for residents and businesses across the city.”

The initiative reflects wider pressures on Ontario’s electricity distribution networks, many of which were built decades ago. Demand is increasing as transport electrification, housing development and commercial activity expand across the province.

Alectra serves more than 1m homes and businesses in Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe. In November 2025, it submitted a C$3.1bn five-year capital plan to the Ontario Energy Board covering the period from 2027 to 2031.

For Mississauga, the upgrades are expected to reduce outages and improve restoration times. For the sector, they signal a gradual shift towards more automated and preventative grid management, as utilities adapt to higher loads and more complex urban systems.

Further regulatory approvals and sustained investment will shape how quickly such upgrades are deployed across the province.
